Considered one of the best Brunellos of 2017 and indeed a wine that matches the top wine Montosoli in several older vintages.
The classic Brumello was first bottled in 1972, so there are now 50 vintages behind it. The winery was also the first to introduce a Cru -Montosoli. Since 2002, Altesino has been owned by Alisabetti Gnudi from neighboring Caparzo, but Altesino is run separately.
About 2017:
95p/James Suckling: "A concentrated bead of blackberries and minerals pervades the nose and palate. Medium-to full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a balanced finish. Tight and very focused. Classic Brunello for the vintage."
94p/Parker: "“ripe and round with lots of pretty textural richness and juicy fruit flavors. These qualities tie in nicely with the character of the vintage that saw long and hot summer days. Dark fruit, plum and blackcurrant pave the way for savory spice, tobacco and limestone. The effect is soothing and rich, and the wine remains perfumed and silky to the end. The tannins are well managed in this hot-vintage wine."
92p/Vinous: “Altesino firmly believes in blending vineyards throughout Montalcino to create the most balanced Burnello from each vintage. In 2017 that approach sure paid off... holds your attention with its sweetly seductive mix of wild strawberries, stems and all, dusty dried flowers and hints of gingery spice. This is pleasantly ripe in style yet balanced throughout, with cherries and doves offset by a hint of candied citrus and bright acids that create a jovial impression. Its tannins are round, complemented by notes of licorice and hard red candies, as this finishes lightly structured and long."
92p/Spectator.
2017 Brunello comes from Altesino (17 ha around the palace, facing south), Macina (9 ha facing north), Pianezzine (6.5 ha due south) + Velona (6.5 ha, facing southwest). 4500-5000 vines, ha, the yield 35 hl/ha, a total of 92,000 fl. in 2017.
