Il Brunello di Montalcino è considerato una delle migliori denominazioni italiane. Situato nella Toscana centro-meridionale sotto il Chianti, i vini del Brunello di Montalcino DOCG sono fatti di un clone di Sangiovese chiamato "brunello", che significa "piccolo scuro", un riferimento ai toni marroni nella buccia dell'uva. A differenza di alcune denominazioni toscane che consentono di assemblare altre uve con il Sangiovese, il Brunello di Montalcino è interamente Sangiovese. La stessa Montalcino è una pittoresca cittadina collinare non particolarmente nota per la produzione di vino fino alla metà del XIX secolo, quando un proprietario di un vigneto locale isolò il clone di Brunello e lo piantò.
