91 + p / Parker mv. One of the great wines from Thanisch Müller-Burggraf, whose 1921 Doctor TBA in the 1980s was the most expensive wine sold in Germany. A classic late harvested Riesling to the dry side with rich aroma and distinguished acidity.
Dr. Thanisch was the original owner - and owner of the heart - of the legendary Doctor Mountain's 3.25 acres, which got its name in the 14th century when a sick Elector recovered from drinking the wine from this mountain. Today, Wegeler also owns a large bite, while the Lauerburg and Heiliggeist Church (leased it for 9 years it to Molitor and Schloss Lieser) each own a few rows of vines. In the 1980s, Thanisch was inherited by two, with Müller-Burggraf being the best for many today, thanks to the talented young leader, Maximiian Berger. He combines modern methods with ancient virtues and places particular emphasis on physiologically ripe grapes with fine acids and balanced sweetness.
The domain covers 16 hectares, all around Doctor in Bernkastel (except small plot to red in Lieser). Sold under just 4 field names: Doctor, Graben, Lay and Badstube. Old ungrafted vines give low yields, rarely over 40 hl / ha, which are made in the 350-year-old Doctor cellar under the mountain itself (and then in new cellars on the outskirts of Bernkastel).
Lay is one of the finest vineyards above the picturesque little town and faces west near the river close to the Doctor on the way to Graach. The name Lay comes from Gaelic "Leie" slate with clay identical to the Doctor himself. Dr. Thanisch (M-G) owns the central part of the mountain, where the oldest plots of pre-Phylloxera vines over 100 years are used for this late harvested wine. It can be enjoyed now, but is probably better in 5-10 years.

"91 + p. The 2019 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Spätlese feinherb Alte Reben offers a clear and elegant yet still slightly oaky bouquet that might irritate some Mosel Riesling lovers, who should also detect the subtle mineral bass note in the background. On the palate, this is a very mineral, tight and tensioned terroir wine that could also have become a GG. The wine has complexity and expression but, as a medium-sweet wine, needs a decade to get rid of the baby fat. The finish is fresh and clear and reveals the crunchy gray slate notes of the Lay. " -Rob.Parker (Stephan Reinhardt). 91p / Falstaff.
