Nervi Gattinara Vigna Valferana 2013

Nervi was bought in 2018 by the top producer Conterno, which is known for its Barolo with cult status. Gattinara Vigna Valferana is made from grapes from 5.3 ha on this reputable cru, which has been known at least since 1228. Valferana is derived from Val Florana, the Iron Valley, and the field has an, even for this area, unusually high content of iron and manganese and produces a wonderfully subtle and stylish, intense wine at Nebbiolo, which is quite different from the wider, majestically landscaped Gattinara from Molsino. Gattinara basically has a milder tannin structure and more acidity than is seen in the great wines from Barolo that Gattinara from Nervi already easily challenges.
