Louis Roederer Cristal 1964
/ #38876564
Magnificent example of Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne from 1964 in perfect condition in every respect despite being 60 years old
Produced only in years considered exceptional, the Cristal cuvée is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (60%) which ages on the lees for a full six years and after disgorgement remains to rest in the estate's cellars for a further eight months. Cristal is undoubtedly the most famous cuvée of the Louis Roederer maison and was born in 1876, over a hundred years ago. It is a wine created to satisfy the demanding and refined palate of Tsar Alexander II. Its name comes from the elegant crystal bottle with a flat bottom which enhances the brilliant color of this wine, thanks to the transparency and luminous effect produced.
Naturally, on the palate the wine lives up to expectations, thanks to its perfectly balanced and pure character. With its persistent aromas, characterized by notes of white fruits, citrus fruits and nuts such as fresh almonds, it can age for several years in the cellar. You can store it without fear for up to twenty years, it will never lose its elegance, liveliness and mineral character that have always distinguished it.
Remaining in the hands of the same family since its foundation in Reims in 1776, by M. Dubois and his son, Louis Roederer is today one of the very few champagne houses still independent. In 1833, Louis Roederer inherited the maison and began the work of expanding the vineyard. It is above all the Cristal cuvée that has historically contributed to the fame of this maison. The history of the Cristal cuvée, the first prestige cuvée in the history of Champagne, begins in 1876 when Tsar Alexander II asked that a bottle be created with particular characteristics, in order to make the imperial champagne easily recognizable by the Tsar and the court. Thus was born a crystal bottle with a flat bottom, whose shape and transparency still accompany us today. After the Russian Revolution of October 1917, Cristal Roederer experienced a period of eclipse, before being reborn in 1924. This cuvée is still the flagship of the Maison Roederer today
