Opus One Overture (OWC - 6 bottles in original wooden box).

Sold for 1,795,- for 6 bottles (DKK 9,154,-) at Løgismose.

Overture is the second wine for the iconic Opus One in Oakville, the result of perhaps the world's most successful joint ventures between two of the wine world's greatest and most passionate personalities, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi.
Opus One has achieved cult status and maintained its position despite stubbornly maintaining a proud pricing policy, even in the years when they shrugged their shoulders in Bordeaux and despite the fact that Napa Valley has been gifted with many other wonderful wines since the curtain fell on Opus One in 1984, when they presented the 1979 and 1980 vintages at the same time.

Opus One is currently sold with a limit of 6 bottles per customer, and after James Suckling scored 100 points and declared the 2013 vintage the world's best wine in 2016, things have gone crazy. It is believed that the interest in Japan alone is great enough to buy the entire production!

Therefore, it has been decided that Overture, which was created in 1993, but has so far only been sold from the winery in Napa Valley, will now be scaled up and expanded into international trade. This is therefore only the 4th time that we in Denmark can experience a slice of what Opus One is all about without being completely ruined.

Overture leans on the old way of thinking about second wines in Bordeaux, and that means that it is not a vintage wine, but rather a blend of wines from the 3 or maybe the last 4 vintages of Opus One. Simply a mixture of wines that did not quite fit into the equation when the final Opus One was to be blended. It is a bit of a secret how the wine is made, but here where Opus One 2017 has just been released, it is allegedly a wine dominated by the fruit from 2018, but made milder, more drinkable by adding up to 50% wines from previous years.

The grapes are the five classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, but the blending ratio is not disclosed, and the barrel and tank aging naturally also vary due to the different vintages and are therefore not declared.

In any case, this is a generous wine that captures, conveys and softens the essence of Opus One. Very expressive aromas of blackcurrant and cherry, which are not lost behind the distinctive notes of coffee, chocolate and vanilla from the long-term barrel aging. Including also the first notes of mushrooms and forest floor supposedly from the oldest parts of the wine. Full-bodied, perhaps less elegant than Opus One, but on the other hand gifted with lovely round tannins that make it forgivingly soft in the mouth.

Many connoisseurs who have the opportunity (read advice) to taste both wines prefer the Overture over the young Opus One. Later the picture changes!

Notes: Blackberry, Cherry, Blackcurrant leaves, Violet, Cocoa, coffee, forest floor.

Full-bodied, Juicy, Aromatic, Dry.

Alc. 14.0%, Barrel aged: 18 months in small French oak barrels, Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec from Oakville, Napa Valley.
