Barbaresco Bruno Giacosa 1978
/ #48619783
Bruno Giacosa is a famous wine producer based in Piedmont. He is particularly known for his intensely perfumed and structured wines of the Barolo and Barbaresco appellations, based on the Nebbiolo grape. Giacosa himself started in the wine business by buying grapes for his father's wines at the age of 15. By 1960, he was ready to start his own business and soon became one of the leading producers of Barbaresco, along with Gaja and the Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative. In 1964, Giacosa was the first producer in Piedmont to bottle a single vineyard "cru" from the Santo Stefano vineyard. Giacosa's standards remained high throughout the 2000s: the 2006 and 2010 wines were sold in bulk as they were not seen as up to par, although most producers do not consider these years to be poor. Bruno Giacosa wines are among the most expensive of their kind. Many of Bruno Giacosa's wines are sourced from trusted growers, rather than estate vineyards. However, in 1982, the house purchased the Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba and a winery was built. Giacosa's wines are aged in the traditional 5000 barrels, the wines can be released as Riservas which receive a red label. Bruno Giacosa achieved legendary status in Piedmont, sadly passing away in 2018 at the age of 88.
Intense garnet red color with orange highlights. Notes of raspberry and wild strawberry are layered with floral aromas of rose and violet. On the palate, good structure is combined with the freshness of the fruit and sweet and silky tannins.
