Pillitteri Estates Winery Icewine Riesling 2011
1 bottle of Riesling Icewine - vintage 2011 - from the Canadian winery Pillitteri Estates Winery ... the world's largest family-owned producer of Icewine. And from here comes the small bottle of Icewine, made from the fabulous Riesling grape. The wine is sold in a delicious gift box, and like the best old balsamics, the wine comes in a small 200 ml. bottle. Good things come in small doses. And then there is a good reason to taste and write about Icewine. and from here comes the small bottle of Icewine, made from the fabulous Riesling grape. Not because I want to be lecturing, because most of you probably know about Icewine, which is a dessert wine that is produced from grapes that are frozen while they are still on the vine. This means that all the water in the grape is frozen away, and only the natural sugar and acid content remains.
This results in a very complex and sweet wine. The grapes for Icewine must also only be harvested when they are frozen naturally and the temperature must be -8 degrees or below when they are picked.
Icewine originally comes from Germany, and there it is of course called Eiswein. It was a wine farmer in Germany who, back in the 18th century, did not harvest his grapes before winter set in and the grapes froze while they were still on the vine. However, he still decided to harvest the grapes and thus Eiswein was created.
Icewine is usually an expensive wine, and this has to do with the fact that the grapes easily rot while waiting for just the right temperature, or they can simply be eaten by animals or fall off. In addition, it is a very small amount of the harvest that ultimately becomes wine, as many more grapes must be used to make Icewine than for example red wine. In general, you only get 1-2 drops of juice per grape for Icewine.
Today, Canada is one of the major countries for producing Icewine, as the weather conditions in Canada are the most optimal for the production of this particular type of wine. It is especially the areas around Niagara Falls in Ontario and the Okanagon Valley in British Colombia where much of the world's Icewine is produced. It is actually said today that the best Icewine in the world comes from the Niagara region in Ontario.
Pillitteri Estates Winery is located precisely in the first area, i.e. Niagara Wine Country...exactly on Niagara Stone Road at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario.
The winery was founded back in 1993 by Gary Pillitteri. He originally comes from Sicily, where his family were wine farmers, but the family emigrated in 1948 to Canada. In 1965, Gary and his wife Lena Agro – who also comes from Sicily – bought a traditional farm with a focus on fruit production.
And for many years the couple grew both vegetables and fruit. These were peaches, cherries, pears, plums, apples, grapefruit and swedes. And soon the family became known throughout the region for its fruit sales from the farm, which Gary called Gary's fruit market.
But when the first Canadian vineyards began to appear, Gary saw the possibilities in a wine production, perhaps also inspired by the family's past from Sicily. He therefore quickly planted some of the fields with vines. In 1988, he made his first Icewine from the hybrid grape Vidal. It immediately won a gold medal at a local tasting.
After this, for the following 5 years Gary converted most of the farm's production to wine production, both dry and especially sweet wines, and thus became the basis for Pillitteri Estates Winery. And since then things have progressed quite nicely. In 1999, Pillitteri was the first winery in the world to make Icewine on Merlot. And here I went thinking that Icewine was always made with Riesling.
At Pillitteri Estates Winery, today Icewine is made from a wide range of grapes, e.g. Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Vidal, Chardonnay, Kerner... yes, they even make Sparkling Icewine. In total, 13 different white and red Icewines are produced, which is more different than any other winery in the world.
So today Pillitteri has become the largest producer of Icewine from its own grapes. In the best vintages, almost half of all wines are Icewine. And at the same time the prices are calculated down the vineyard. In the last 20 years, Pillitteri has won over 700 medals, both Canadian and international.
Here we have the house's Riesling Icewine, which – like most of Pillitteris' Icewines – is not aged in casks to maintain the incredible balance between the high sugar content and the acidity.
In the glass, the wine is clear, bold ... medium yellow with a red/brownish tinge. In the nose there is heather honey, green bananas, honeydew melon, mango, overripe apples, fermented fruit, nuts, smoke and coconut.
In the mouth, the wine is not at all as sweet as I expected. There is an acidity that repeats itself throughout the taste, and that suits the wine. This also means that the sweetness does not take over the dominance at all, although it is of course a sweet dessert wine. The wine is creamy, bold and there is again a bit of coconut, a bit of pineapple, banana, liqueur sweetness and notes of honey. Well held together by the acidity and ending with a sweet burnt aftertaste with a little bitterness.
I am by no means a specialist in Icewine, but I like that there is acidity/backbone together with a pleasant sweetness, which is why I end up with 5 nice Thumbs Up.
