Red

The last bottles available of this type of pinot noir from Pierre Naigeon, before the takeover of the domain by Jean-Marie Chapier. Super quality and lovely pinot with lots of red berry flavor with an extra edge that makes it unique and no longer available in Denmark other than right here on this page.

From the northern part of Burgundy, on the high slopes west of the Côte de Nuits, Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits delivers a classic interpretation of the region's Pinot Noir. Pierre Naigeon works with a focus on transparency and terroir, which is expressed in a style where the fruit is balanced with a precise acidity structure. The wine typically achieves intensity and concentration in good years, when the grapes reach sufficient ripeness without losing freshness.

2020 represents a warm and ripe vintage, which for this appellation has yielded wines with generous fruitiness and ripe tannins, but still with a cool undertone, characteristic of Hautes Côtes. The wine can be enjoyed young for its primary fruit, but will also have the potential for a few years down the line to gain in complexity.

The style is immediately accessible, but characterized by the classic lightness and finesse one expects from the area. Pierre Naigeon is recognized for his serious approach to both field work and cellar, which leaves its mark on the whole.

Burgundy has been "wine country" since the 2nd century and stretches from Chablis in the north to Beaujolais in the south. Southeast of Chablis lies the Côte d'Or, which is divided into two parts: the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, and further south you find the Côte Chalonnais, the Mâconnais and finally Beaujolais.

Domaine les Astrelles, the new name for Domaine Pierre Naigeon since 2019, is located in Gevrey-Chambertin, on the industrial side of the town east of the railway line. The vineyard was taken over by Isabelle and Jean-Marie Chapier when Pierre Naigeon sold the family property. Jean-Marie Chapier, a trained biologist, and his wife Isabelle, originally a pharmacist, have taken ambitious steps to restart and reposition Domaine les Astrelles. They have brought in a new production team, led by oenologist Julien Millet, whose father François Millet was previously cellar master at Comte Georges de Vogüé in Chambolle-Musigny. The property now covers 14 hectares spread over Gevrey-Chambertin, Marsannay and Fixin, and produces around 30 different wines, from Bourgogne Aligoté to grands crus such as Bonnes-Mares and Mazys-Chambertin. Domaine les Astrelles was originally run by the Naigeon family for five generations. Originally coopers, the family bought a small plot of land for wine production. In the 1950s, they expanded their landholdings to include plots in the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, including Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares. From 2003 to 2005, Pierre increased the landholdings to 11.5 hectares. After many successful years, Pierre retired and sold the winery to the Chapier family. Jean Marie has been an active member of the GAEC in Bergerac and shares the visions of terroir and sustainability with Pierre Naigeon. The 2020 wines were the first vintage released by Mr. Chapier and his team, who have increased their focus on sustainability. Chapier’s goal is to create a pure expression of the Côtes de Nuits terroir, and he has invested in small steel tanks, egg-shaped ceramic barrels for the white wines, and special wooden barrels for the separate vinification of the grapes from each small plot. The wines are neither clarified nor filtered, and only a minimal amount of sulfur is used during bottling. Several of the wines have achieved organic certification as of 2019.

The grapes for this wine come from steep slopes around Segrois. The vineyards are west-facing and the soil consists of white marl and limestone. The vines were planted in the early 1990s.

Award tasting note: (2020 vintage) "'Delicate and elegant on the nose, with a slight menthol character on the palate.' Elly Owen, freelance sommelier and educator. 'Good fruit notes and spices on the nose, showing a little evolution that helps to enhance complexity, leading to well-integrated tannins on the palate, with a hint of smokiness.' Davide Santeramo, The Ritz." - Bronze, Sommelier Wine Awards
