Julia Bertram Mayschosser Mönchberg Spätburgunder 2016
/ #64671517
Mayschosser Mönchberg is one of the central vineyards in the Ahr Valley, where the slate soil and cool climate allow Spätburgunder to express great finesse and precision. In recent years, Julia Bertram has distinguished herself among the younger generation of Ahr with a focus on the freshness and typicity of the grape – more emphasis on minerality and transparency than on extraction. 2016 was a year that particularly highlighted the structure and balance of the area, with a cool spring and warm late summer, which led to ripe grapes and a good acid profile.
The vinification at Bertram is classic: hand-harvested, selective sorting and aging in used barrels to preserve fruit and character. The result is typically a wine with distinctive red fruit, floral undertones and a mineral imprint. The best bottles from the field develop harmoniously over 5-10 years, with the primary fruit replaced by more complex notes. The 2016 edition has generally proven to be resilient but accessible with moderate tannin and discreet barrel character.
International assessments have noted consistent quality for the vintage, with structure and freshness in particular being highlighted in various renowned reviews.
