Based in the heart of Saint-Julien, this 2nd Cru Classé from 1855 is known for both precision and depth. The wine is typically composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with a supplement of Merlot, and is often characterized by subdued elegance and solid structures. 1998 marked itself as a traditional Bordeaux vintage, where the wines of the left bank in particular received good ripeness in the grapes, combined with a clear acid structure and balanced tannins. The aging at the producer is predominantly in new, French barrels, which adds depth and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
With more than two decades in bottle, the wine has developed tertiary aromas, but still with a focus on balance between power and finesse. Reviews from international critics such as Wine Advocate place the vintage firmly at the good end of Saint-Julien in 1998, although without belonging to the great peak of the century in the area. Ready to drink now, but can continue to develop complexity in the coming years.
