Solaia 2000

/ #12213734
Size: 1.5 L (Magnum)
Red

Tenuta Tignanello 'Solaia' combines its intense fruit and warmth, with a wonderful complexity and minerality. There are layers upon layers of ripe red fruits and spices, and a deep floral note adds further complexity to the wine. The taste is unsurpassed, full, round and slightly sweet with nice rounded tannins. The taste is rich, soft and resilient and leads to a nice and persistent aftertaste.

Solaia is the flagship of Antinori, Tuscany's historic and perhaps most famous producer, and the wine is the golden child of the collaboration between Piero Antinori and the legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis, whose magical touch has also enriched other Super Tuscans, such as Sassicaia, Tignanello and Sammarco for just to name a few.

The wine debuted in 1978 as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and from 1982, Tuscany's royal grape Sangiovese was added to the mix. The grapes come exclusively from a special corner of the 147 ha. large Tignanello estate. Or a little more than a corner, because as the wine gained worldwide success, the area cultivated for Solaia has grown to 20 ha.
In the beginning, the wine was an experiment, which was only exposed on the domestic market in the years after the Antinori family's break with Sassicaia, but since then the wine has grown in both quality and quantity, and today it is one of the most sought-after Italian wines, admired by people all over the world wine enthusiasts.
Originally 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, but since 1979 with a quietly growing content of Tuscany's mother grape Sangiovese, which here in the 2012 vintage creeps up to 15%. Manual harvest with tending of the bunches up in the vineyard from September 25 for Sangiovese until October 12, when the last Cabernet Sauvignon grapes arrived. 100% destemming and individual fermentation of the 3 grape varieties in 6,000 liter conical stainless steel tanks. After this, 18 months of maturation in new French 228 liter casks still with the 3 grape varieties separated, after which the final cuvée is put together in stainless steel shortly before bottling, which happened after clarification with fresh egg whites and a very light filtration.
Solaia 1997 was voted "Wine of the Year" in Wine Spectator back in 2000 and has since become a style icon for the Italian Cabernet dominated wines with so far 14 prestigious times Tre Bicchieri in the Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso and for this wine in question the title of "Rosso Dell 'anno" in the 2016 edition of Guida Veronelli.
