A very nice Vintage from a house founded by the Dane JH Andresen, which today is one of the extremely few historic houses still owned by the Portuguese.
Jan Heinrich Andresen was born in 1826 on the island of Føhr in Southern Jutland. In 1840 he wanted to emigrate to America, but only reached Oporto, where he decided to stay. He worked his way up and founded this Portvinhus as a 19-year-old in 1845. It gained a good reputation and Andresen managed to become president of the Chamber of Commerce in Oporto.
The family owned it until 1942, when a war and thus failing exports led to the sale to the Pereira dos Santos family, who still own the house. It is managed today by Carlos Flores & winemaker Alvaro van Zeller, a well-known person from, among others, Noval and Baron de Vilar (some of the house's oldest wines are supplied by Andresen). The house is still little known, but is strongly on the rise.
Despite the drought, 2017 is considered one of the best vintages in decades and declared by all important houses. Andresen's Vintage has only been rated by a few, but is considered by VintagePort.se to be better than 2016 (96p/WIneEnthusiast who has not tasted the 2017 quantities are simply too small!).
2017: "Deep ruby, almost black...Of course immature, but balanced with very elegant and round tannins... Complex Port with berries, fruit, candy and chocolate... with a long, lovely finish. Very promising indeed" - VintagePort.se
(rated as "Very Impressive" - best Andresen Port in tasting of Andresen 1963-2020.
