CT-note: OK, now we are talking, a big step up from the Premier Crus. The nose is sophisticated here with that beautiful, so distinctively French mix of game/musk/earth intermixed with red fruit. The wines of Coche Dury are some of the most prized in any collection around the world. The Hospices de Beaune is a top-level wine estate covering 60 hectares, of which 85% are in premiers crus and grands crus areas. This Cuvée is made up from 5 superbly-placed Volnay Premier Cru lots (En Caillerets, Carelle Sous la Chapelle, Frémiets, Taillepieds and Le Village). Only 3-5 barrels are produced annually. For many years now, the Domaine’s vineyards have been cultivated taking a sustainable, environmentally-friendly approach (no chemical inputs), and even according to organic principles when the conditions over the year allow it, as they did in 2018. Bright purple in color. Nose with lively raspberry fruit and intensity, a hint of licorice. A rather firm and dense mouth that does not remove the wine’s nice subtlety.

CT-note: Medium garnet. Discrete nose with very complex aromas of red and dark fruit with a whole cluster touch. Elegant presence on the palate, good volume and dry extract providing structure. This is a sublime Burgundy, reminds me of the DRC style both structurally and aromatically. If you are a fan of elegant, aromatic Burgundies, you will love this. CT-note: Wonderfully balanced and in great shape! It needed 1-2 hours to really open up and gain weight, but was expressive the entire evening. The nose screamed Chambertin, with bright red fruit (cherry, strawberry), damp earth, licorice and spice. Well balanced, concentrated, complex and intriguing. Drikkemoden Chambertin. Lucien Le Moine is an unusual producer as they act as négociant and buy wines just as they have been produced and then store themselves to perferction. They have no contracts with the farmers and travel to hundreds of producers in Bourgogne and after a handshake they get to buy the best wines ti stire in their iwn cellar in beaune och köper vinerna direkt när de är nyjästa för att sedan själv lagra dem till perfektion i sin kalla vinkällare i Beaune. An overtly floral and well-layered nose is elegant, airy and pure with plenty of spice elements adding breadth to the super-fresh essence of red currant aromas that are trimmed in discreet oak nuances. There is notably more size, weight and power to the tautly muscular flavors that culminate in a serious, robust and lingering finish. This is not one of them. Mounir and Rotem Saouma (owners of Lucien) offer a deep, dark, mysterious grand cru. What complications of gaminess and smoke the wine presents at first resolve to complexities by the second day the bottle is open, its detail just beginning to unfold. The wine’s depth of fruit expands on its satin texture, still lovely, rich and intoxicating five days out. If Lucien Le Moine’s premier cru wines often rise to grand-cru stature, what is left to say about the stature of this grand cru? Two bottles are included even though the pictures are on one of them.

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this. Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970! A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions. The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru, which contains just under 50% stems, demands more coaxing than the Les Amoureuses, eventually revealing cranberry and hints of hoisin, sous-bois, tobacco and crushed stone aromas, all very complex. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannin framing pure dark berry fruit laced with brown spice, tobacco and sage. This Musigny displays wonderful density and power, yet retains the precision of a noble Burgundy on the long finish. Outstanding.” – Antonio Galloni 95-97 Points Advocate: 93-95+ points Aromas of blood orange rose petals and ripe wild berries introduce the 2017 Musigny Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) a full-bodied deep and layered wine with superb depth and mid-palate amplitude a generous core of sappy fruit and fine chalky structuring tannins. It's a gorgeous Musigny that might well develop along the lines of the superb 2000 rendition. Barnier told me that this was one of the few cuvees chez Jadot that saw some whole cluster this year.

CT-note: Delicate and precise. This is so fine and lacey. It took about 2 hours to open up. Initially shy and restrained, it quietly grew into a beautifully balanced and complex wine. One of only 2084 bottles produced! Age of the vines : 50-52 years old Chambertin is among the top 5 best grands crus in Burgundy. Its central position on a slightly sloping, moderately cool and windy hill gives the wine a unique texture. It faces east. This deep substratum is finely covered with limestone scree and silt which have settled for millenaries and which agriculture has mixed for many centuries. The soils of Le Clos de Bèze and Le Chambertin prove to be different: their difference comes from an unbalanced proportion between the composition of Bajocian crinoidal limestone and marly layers. Both upper and lower register aromas include the essence of plum, red cherry and lavender that contrasts with plenty of spice, earth and sauvage elements. The rich, powerful and gorgeously textured flavors possess excellent size and weight along with very solid concentration where the abundant amount of dry extract buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the youthfully austere and impressively long finish where a touch of bitter cherry pit character arises. Once again, patience definitely advised. – Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, Score: 92-95 The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet that is focused and direct, offering red and black fruit, crushed stone and more terroir expression than the Mazoyères. The palate is medium-bodied, the sappy red fruit on the entry laced with marmalade and dried quince, and grippy in the mouth, with a touch of spiciness, although it does not fan out on the finish as I hoped.
