Sassicaia - Italy's best and most famous wine
Italy's best and most famous red wine and pioneer in Italian winemaking, also called Italy's Latour. As the first Italian wine, Sassicaia won 100 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and the wine has received the otherwise difficult to obtain three glasses in Gambero Rosso no less than 21 times. In short, Sassicaia is a living legend. Sassicaia is made at the Tenuta San Guido winery in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, and here the winery's 2 other wines Guidalberto and Le Difese are also made.
Long-term pioneering work created world-class
Founder Mario Incisa della Rochetta began planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the 1940s with Bordeaux's famous 1st Cru as a model, believing that the soil of Tenuta San Guido had many features in common with the soil of Bordeaux, especially in the Graves area. . Mario was also the first in Tuscany to use new French oak barrels, which was groundbreaking in Italy. However, the wine remained a secret until 1968, when Mario judged that now the wine was ready to be sent to market. The wine was christened Sassicaia, which in the local Tuscan dialect means sandy and gravelly soil. It was much talked about from the start and an immediate success in Italy and was the first Italian quality wine to break through in the export markets. Today, Sassicaia is considered the first Supertoscan and the father of all Italian Cabernet-based wines.
Sassicaia DOC
The wine has a saturated red-purple, almost bluish color and a deep aroma of ripe black currants, blackberries, cedar, tobacco and toasted barrel notes which are fully integrated with age. In the mouth you will experience a dizzying level of concentration and extraction with dense, cool and dark berries and fine polished tannins. The wine has enough maturity to be enjoyed already as a young person and at the same time enough acidity, structure and extract to be able to be stored for at least a couple of decades. However, do not expect a Sassicaia to reach its peak before about 10 years of storage under the right conditions. A colossal wine that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
