1/2 fl. (375ml) Dr Zenzen 2016 Eiswein, Pinot Noir “Blanc de Noir”, Rheinhessen, 2016 not rated (’15 got 4.5 * / 5 in The Last Bottle).
Rheinhessen is one of the few places in Europe where today you can regularly make Eiswein, not least at Saulheim, where this wine is harvested from grapes at 8-10 minus degrees, harvested and pressed frozen. The grape is the late-ripening pinot noir, a wine with rich aroma, fullness, long taste and noble acidity under the sweetness. Today, the law requires a must weight minimum such as Beerenauslese, but an Ice Pig has significantly more acid and therefore long life.
The Einig-Zenzen family has been making wine since 1636, and this is their supremely best wine.
1 fl. Dr Pauly-Bergweiler, 2016 Bernkasteler BADSTUBE Riesling Kabinett, 90p / WineEnthusiast. The Pauly-Bergweiler’s vineyard is beautifully situated on the Moselle and the picturesque town of Bernkastel. This wine comes from the steep mountain immediately above the house, where they own almost 6 hectares of old Riesling, spread over several plots (Badstube includes 68 hectares, divided into the plots Alte Badstube, Doctor, Graben, Lay, Bratehöfchen and Matheisbildchen). Pauly’s is especially Graben and Lay, with annually approx. 12,000 fl. Cabinet.
90p / WineEnthusiast: ”Traces of chalky mineral and zippy lime acidity highlight sweet pink grapefruit and honeydew in this fruity, fresh wine. It’s delicate in texture but vibrant and punchy, finishing long on a tart tangerine note. Drink now through 2021 ”.
1 fl. von HÖVEL 2915 "Oberemmeler" Riesling Feinherb (semi-dry), 91p / Galloni, seen on Wine-Searcher to 199 (DK).
about vineyard: **** (4/5) -Gault-Millau. "Egon Müller and von Hövel are the most famous owners of Scharzhofberg" -Broadbent. Emperor Napoleon had his favorites. His white favorite was not Burgundy or Bordeaux, but Champagne - and the purebred Riesling from Weingut von Hövel!
The domain was -like Maximin Grünhaus- originally part of the Maximiner monastery in Trier and was secularized under Napoleon. In 1803 it was bought by the mayor of Trier, Grach (who, incidentally, signed the baptismal certificate of a certain Karl Marx). In 1813, Napoleon I came to visit and praised the mayor's Riesling in high tones. He left a signed gold cup, still in the family's possession.
Today, the vineyard is run by 7th generation Maximilian von Hövel. The oldest parts of the vineyard are from the 12th century. The main building has been burnt down twice and is in its current version from 1732. The cellars date from the 12th century, where long rows of oak barrels are used for both fermentation and storage.
