A unique and rare white from one of Australia's best wineries, 100% biodynamic operation, i.a. 90p / WineSpectator, all 100% d'Arenberg, McLaren Vale, b.a. 90p / 100 in WineSpectator and Wine & Spirits.
The Roussanne grape is rare. Even at the birthplace of the Hermitage in the Rhône, the grape is close to extinct. D'Arenberg in Australia was first with Viognier and also with the even more rare Roussanne. A glorious and deeply original white wine, dry, full-bodied with intense aroma of apricot, pineapple, the taste is strong, long, but with distinguished acidity, light hints of papaya and mango.
Chester om vinen: "The first crop of Roussanne from the 2000 vintage was covered in tiny 'Money Spiders'. Popular belief is that kindness to these creatures will bring good luck, so we refrained from sending the spiders to their death. By the next year the Money Spiders had relocated, making the first release of this wine in 2001. " Today, the 20-25 year old vines produce small amounts of wine with real character, which for me surpasses very white Hermitage (which is usually made by the less exciting marsanne). The operation is 100% biodynamic, the grapes are basket-pressed and fermented in steel. 90p in both Spectator and Wine & Spirits, who write: "A sumptuous roussanne, this carries clean flavors of citrus, tangy pineapple and toasted almond on a gentle, creamy texture. Serve with a rich fish stew." Great now and the next 2-4 years.
d'Arenberg was founded in 1912 by Joseph Osborn, who sold his stable of racehorses and used the money to buy a vineyard. The most famous horse named Footbolt has named one of the house's most famous wines of the same name, which is still made today. In the same way, all of d'Arenberg's wines have a fun story behind their untraditional names, and the house also works under the motto “The Art of Being Different”. Today, the 4th generation, Chester Osborn, is the owner and winemaker.
d’Arenberg is located in McLaren Vale - the most famous wine region in Australia approx. 35 kilometers south of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.
The quality level of d'Arenberg's wines is high and you get a lot for your money. Approx. half of the domain's fields are planted with Shiraz, but the house is constantly experimenting and trying new grape varieties. In all, they have 33 different grape types around the domain and, in addition to more well-known grapes, also have grapes such as Verdelho, Graciano and the probably even more unknown Tinta Cao as well as Souzao. From vintage 2018, all of d'Arenberg's own fields and cellars are certified organic as a minimum, and some even biodynamic.
