(2 fl, price for both, guide retail DKK 450) .. Fraitz Haag 2018 Brauneberger JUFFER Riesling Spätlese, b.a. 91p / Spectator, Schzrzhofberg 2014 Riesling Kabinett b.a. 91p / Parker, 18p / Oldenburg. Both are members of VDP, both vineyards are "Grosse Lage".
Fritz Haag Brauneberger JUFFER Riesling Spätlese - comes from one of the finest vineyards on the Moselle, owned by Fritz Haag. An immensely delicious late harvested Riesling with sumptuous aroma, fine acidity and good length with perfect balance. Juffer faces south and has perfect Devon slate. The Hague owns the best parts of the 25 hectare up to 80 degree steep slope. 91p / WineSpectator, 600 boxes tapped, enjoyed 2022-34.
Fritz Haag is one of the top-level domains in the Mittelmosel, which under young Oliver Haag is perhaps better than ever. A total of 27 acres, (4 * / 4 in Hugh Johnson's pocket guide, 5 * / 5 in WeinPlus etc).
Scharzhofberg by the Saar is one of the very few “Grands Crus” in Germany that (like Burgundy's Grands Crus Montrachet and Chambertin) only mentions the name of the vine on the label and not both city and field names. The vineyard has been known since Roman times, from the 14th century under its current name. The 27.35 hp blue slate (see photo) facing south is divided between just 8 owners. The church owned the entire mountain until 1800 and is still a large owner (Bischöfliches Weingüter and Vereinigte Hospitien). A handful of private domains probably deliver better wine, especially Egon Müller (4 hp) and von Hövel (3 hp), as well as van Volxem and Kesselstatt.
RobertParker om vinen: "The 2014 Scharzhofberg Riesling Kabinett (AP # 7) displays a clear and elegant, lovely, pure and flinty nose with lemon and white fruit flavors. There is a great clarity, finesse and lifting transparency on the elegant and finely racy palate - whereas the pure and stimulating finish reveals the great complexity of the Scharzhofberg terroir and tastes almost dry. This wine is bottled with 9% alcohol "Nydes 2016-40. Second rating: 18p / Oldenburg. .
Since the 13th century, Von Hövel has been located in the village of Oberemmel 200 m above Wiltingen by the river, approx. 5 km. before the outlet of the Saar in the Moselle. The domain was originally a monk's refuge belonging to the monastery of Trier, but was privatized in 1806 at the instigation of Emperor Napoleon and sold to Emmerich Grach; tiptipoldefar to Max Von Kunow, who runs the vineyard today. The stately property has been burned and rebuilt a few times, but the cellars are the same as 800 years ago.
In his early youth, Max worked and learned at several top wineries in several German wine districts as well as in Burgundy. In 2002 he started studying oenology and then worked for Karthäuserhof, Fürst Löwenstein, Iphofen in Franconia and was a consultant for growers in Luxembourg when his father became ill in 2010 and he hurried home to take over the family property. Today, the operation is biodynamic.
