From Kjær Sommerfeldt:
Young Charles Magnien is rightly described as one of Burgundy's bright new stars. In 2012, he took over the ancestral vineyard of Gevrey-Chambertin after his father, François, and in record time has brought himself and his formidable wines into the international spotlight.
However, winemaking is not new to the Magnien family, who have been growing wine in Burgundy since the 18th century. Charles' distinguished task is thus to lift the legacy of the previous 12 generations, but it does not seem in any way to burden him. On the contrary.
The focal point of his wine production is, as mentioned, Gevrey-Chambertin with a total holdings of 6 hectares, which include plots on Lavaux St-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Today, 70-80% of the vineyards are cultivated according to organic principles, but typically for Burgundy, the finished wines are not classified. The vines on the best plots are typically between 70 and 100 years old, which is a strong contributing factor to the phenomenal complexity of the wines. The type of Pinot Noir clone Charles works with is also called Pinot Noir Magnien, and it adds further refined fullness and spice to the wines.
Charles Magnien's approach to winemaking is humble and characterized by common sense. The basements on the property are new without being flashy, but of course built with "gravity-flow" in mind. The barrels are leased to ensure high quality, appropriate rotation and replacement. The younger generation in Burgundy is also thinking of eating after nourishment, which can not fail to trigger both sympathy and admiration.
The wines from Gevrey-Chambertin are generally found with many different expressions and directions. They can look dark and masculine, but they can also be feminine and elegant. Thus, there seem to be two diverse and ruling credos. Charles unconditionally belongs to the part that weights grace and refinement over intensity and weight. He is a terroir thinker of the finest kind, and a banner bearer of modern Burgundy
