Guido Giri Barolo 1974
/ #43950566
Barolo from Piedmont is made exclusively from Nebbiolo and is known for its aging ability and tannin structure. 1974 is considered an average to good vintage in the area, where relatively cool growing conditions gave the wines a fruit-driven, relatively classic character and an often more upright structure compared to warmer vintages. Guido Giri is not among the most prominent names in Barolo, but the work in the area usually follows the traditional methods of long maceration and up to several years of barrel aging.
The wines from that decade typically exhibit nuances of dried rose petals, tea, leather and deep tertiary notes, albeit in bottles that have retained their structure. The 1974 wines should now be considered mature and ready to drink for those who prefer the developed notes that Nebbiolo can deliver after decades of bottle aging. The aging potential is considered exhausted for most bottles, but well-kept examples can still surprise.
