Working from his base in the Muscadet area of the Loire, Jérôme Bretaudeau is widely noted for his precision and independent style. Although better known for white wines on Melon de Bourgogne, his Stratera Pinot Noir is a rare example of Loire red made with a focus on freshness and textural clarity. Sourced from local granitic and schist soils, the wine typically undergoes a gentle extraction and is aged without excessive oak influence, aiming to underline fruit vibrancy and mineral nuance.

Stratera Pinot Noir is crafted in the Loire Valley by Jérôme Bretaudeau, a winemaker known for his precise, transparent style. Bretaudeau typically works with sustainable methods, often employing low intervention throughout vinification to allow the grape and terroir to shine. The Pinot Noir here tends to be lifted and detailed; Loire versions generally show a lighter extraction and brighter acidity compared to their Burgundian counterparts. 2023 is shaping up to be a balanced year in the Loire, with early reports indicating favorable conditions for aromatic clarity and freshness. Stratera Pinot Noir is expected to offer notes of red cherry, fresh herbs, and subtle spice, restrained oak presence, and a vivid mineral backbone. While approachable young, it will develop further nuances over the next few years.

Note from Wine Advocate for the 2020 vintage (95P).
Crafted from Pinot Noir grapes 100% destemmed and matured in barrels (10% new), Jérôme Bretaudeau’s Statera reveals an elegant, profound bouquet with aromas of smoke, cherries, licorice, menthol, fresh tobacco and gentian. The palate is medium-bodied, combining succulent tannins, fine acidity and well-integrated oak with impressive substance on the finish. It needs a couple of years in bottle, but you can already see the potential. This wine has the potential to outshine many well-known Burgundies. Bravo!
