Tenuta Masseto, Massetino 2018
/ #48184905
Winter 2018 was characterized by cold weather and some snowy days that we had not seen for years.
The weather conditions changed rapidly from March onwards with one of the rainiest springs in the history of Masseto. At the same time, temperatures, especially in April, were higher than average, which led to rapid vegetative growth, culminating in flowering that occurred a week earlier than usual.
While temperatures returned to normal in May, the high amount of rain intensified diseases, especially downy mildew. Only thanks to perfect organization was it possible to control the disease while maintaining healthy leaves and grapes.
In July, the mostly sunny and warm weather allowed a bit of rest before veraison occurred, punctually, around July 22nd. August was hot with some rain around the middle of the month, which prevented the occurrence of significant water stress.
The harvest began on August 31st with the youngest vines trained as alberello; a week later we began harvesting the older vines. The differences between the parcels within Masseto were particularly marked, leading to a very long harvest that only concluded on October 4th and produced 9 different lots of vinification.
