Barolo from the Paiagallo field is one of the rarer single-vineyard wines from the heart of the Barolo zone. Giovanni Canonica traditionally works with long maceration and uses only large, old barrels for maturation, which puts classic virtues in focus and lets the distinctive character of the field shine through. 2019 was a year with a cool spring and a warm, stable summer, which has resulted in wines with a nice structure, ripe tannins and a fairly pronounced freshness in the fruit. Paiagallo is often known for its balance between elegance and depth, and in Canonica's interpretation this is expressed in a rather understated, but complex style with an emphasis on transparency and authenticity. Barolo from Canonica is regularly recognized among collectors for its development potential; the best bottles gain significantly in complexity over several decades. Paiagallo 2019 is also lifted by the fresh nerve of the vintage, which is a delight for both the patient and those who want to experience the wine in its youthful form.
