The house:

Casanova di Neri (Montalcino, Tuscany) is a family-owned Brunello house founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, who purchased the Podere Casanova estate on the east side of Montalcino and began an ambitious venture into Sangiovese and Brunello, at the time with relatively few producers in the area.

After Giovanni Neri's death in 1991, Giacomo Neri took over the business, and today the next generation is also active in the house.

The house is known for working with several different plots/areas in Montalcino (including the southern part around Sant'Angelo in Colle) and for having been among the driving forces behind modern, terroir-focused Brunello.

Recognitions throughout history:

- Gold medal at the Challenge International du Vin for Brunello 1982 Etichetta Bianca.
- Tre Bicchieri (Gambero Rosso) for Cerretalto (1988 vintage).
- Wine Spectator “Wine of the Year” for Tenuta Nuova 2001
- Several rare 100-point top scores over the years (including mentions for Cerretalto 2001 and others) from major international critics.

The wine:

Tenuta Nuova 2016 is Casanova di Neri's iconic "single cru" Brunello, from the house's southernmost foothold in the area (Le Cetine)

2016 is considered one of the most classic top vintages in Montalcino with an ideal balance between ripeness, freshness and tannin structure – and Tenuta Nuova delivers a wine with deep fruit, balsamic/herbal complexity and significant length, made for long aging.

The year:

Casanova di Neri’s own vintage notes describe 2016 as a “perfect balance” between elegance, opulence, structure and complexity. A relatively warm winter, normal bud burst at the beginning of April, flowering at the end of May, a mild summer with sporadic rain – and especially large temperature fluctuations day/night just before harvest, which resulted in a slow but steady ripening. The harvest was done manually in the 2nd–3rd week of September.

Drinking and storage potential:

James Suckling recommends in his note that it can already be drunk now (“Try after 2024”) and Jeb Dunnuck indicates a drinking window of approximately 2025–2041.

Casanova di Neri himself emphasizes the wine's very long lifespan.
