"One of the most breathtaking vineyards in the New World. Beautiful and striking wines too" -Hugh Johnson Vin 2022.
2018 is the 20th vintage from Salentein, one of the finest private vineyards in Argentina, which is located high and fairly isolated in Uco south of Mendoza at the foot of the Andes mountains, which here reach an altitude of 6100 meters.
Barrel Selection (also sold as Reserva) is pure malbec from especially 2 parcels at 1100-1700 meters altitude. The wines are double sorted on arrival and fermented in stainless steel and large oak barrels before malolactic fermentation and aging for 12 months in small French oak barrels, used 0, 1 and 2 years. The wine is 100% from our own domain.
Salentein is owned by a Dutch entrepreneur together with the Pulenta family, who pioneered quality in Argentina (they made Trapiche famous).
Photo: The cellar is a wonder and extends over several floors under the buildings, where the wine is stored at a constant 12 degrees. Considered one of the most beautiful in the country -nothing has been spared!- and if you have time, there is also a posada (hotel and restaurant) and a beautiful chapel.
Photo: Winemaker José "Pepe" Galante is one of South America's most respected winemakers: "The soil means a lot to the wine - the vines have to fight to mature, it gives quality". He is advised by French Claude Bourguignon (field) and Californian Paul Hobbs (cellar photo).
Barrel Selection is sold in the US as the Reserve wines are identical.
About 2018: 92p/Falstaff, 90p/Tim Atkin, 91p/JamesSuckling
90p/Vinous: "An Uco Valley Malbec made from vines grown at different altitudes and aged for 12 months in used barrels. Typically for the region, it is bright purple in color, with a nose of fresh plums, red currants, herbs and secondary woody notes. Slightly reductive and easygoing in the mouth, with fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity in a bold but delicious combo for a table wine."
89p/Parker: "It has notes of black fruit and a creamy touch with some smoky undertones. The palate is tasty and juicy, with concentration and power, with tannins to stand up to food. The toasted aromas seem to grow with time in the glasses."
