Theme Auction in January: Red Burgundy

Few wines captivate us quite like the Pinots of Burgundy! It is therefore with great enthusiasm that we dedicate the year’s first theme auction entirely to these timeless wines.

For many wine lovers, Burgundy is the ultimate destination. This is where the Pinot Noir grape reveals its true, multifaceted character, and where the concept of terroir reaches its highest level.

Right now, we are delighted to present an extraordinary themed auction on ShareWine. More than 300 auctions featuring red wine from Burgundy are approaching their conclusion this Thursday evening.

What makes this auction special is the breadth and quality of the selection. Sellers from all over Europe have opened their cellars and listed their Burgundy wine treasures on the marketplace. This means you gain access to bottles that are rarely seen in regular trade.

The selection is extensive, satisfying both the curious enthusiast and the serious collector. We are seeing an impressive range that includes everything from the mythical wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to a string of Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and Village wines. The focus is sharply on the most coveted communes: Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Vougeot.

Below, we delve into the individual areas and producers that characterize this month's themed auction.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

When the conversation turns to exclusive wine, it's impossible to overlook Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC). It is, without comparison, Burgundy's most famous estate, and for many, their wines represent the absolute pinnacle of what can be achieved in a bottle.

DRC is known for its uncompromising approach to quality, extremely low yields, and a biodynamic philosophy that allows the terroir to speak freely. Their wines are rare guests on the market, and demand always far exceeds supply.

Therefore we are proud to present examples of these iconic wines in multiple vintages, offering a unique opportunity to acquire one of the wine world's greatest treasures.

Vosne-Romanée

Vosne-Romanée is often referred to as the "pearl of the Côte de Nuits," and for good reason. It is in this commune that Pinot Noir achieves a balance and finesse that many other regions strive for but seldom reach.

The wines from Vosne-Romanée are characterized by their unmatched elegance. Typically, you will experience a wine that is both velvety and spicy at the same time. The texture is often silky, but beneath the polished surface lies a depth and complexity that ensures enormous aging potential.

Aromas range from red and dark berries to exotic spices, violets, and undertones of forest floor. If you are seeking the ultimate combination of power and grace, Vosne-Romanée is where you should place your bids.

Gevrey-Chambertin

If Vosne-Romanée is the queen, then Gevrey-Chambertin is the king. This is the largest wine-producing village in the Côte de Nuits, home to no fewer than nine Grand Crus.

The style in Gevrey-Chambertin is markedly different from its neighbors. Here, you get wines with muscle. The character is often described as masculine, structured, and powerful. The wines typically have a deeper color and a firmer tannin structure, making them exceptionally well-suited for long-term cellaring.

In terms of taste, we move into notes of blackcurrant, licorice, leather, and a distinct earthy minerality. These are wines that require time in the cellar to fully unfold, but when they do, they deliver an intensity and power that is hard to match. Gevrey-Chambertin is the obvious choice for those who love wine with backbone and character.

Chambolle-Musigny & Morey-Saint-Denis

Between the two giants, Gevrey and Vosne, we find two smaller but incredibly exciting communes, each offering unique experiences.

Morey-Saint-Denis is often overlooked in the shadow of its famous neighbors, which makes it a fantastic place to find value for money. Stylistically, Morey bridges the extremes; it has some of Gevrey's structure and some of Chambolle's fruitiness. These are wines with great personality, often characterized by wild berries and a slightly spicy tone. For the price-conscious collector, Morey-Saint-Denis is often where the best deals are found.

Chambolle-Musigny, on the other hand, is the epitome of seduction. The area is known for producing the most "feminine" wines in Burgundy. Here, it is not about power, but about purity, perfume, and lightness. A classic Chambolle smells of roses, violets, and raspberries, and it lands on the palate with a lightness that can be deceiving because the intensity is sky-high.

Vougeot

Vougeot is dominated by the famous Grand Cru vineyard Clos de Vougeot, a large, walled vineyard with a complex history and a multitude of owners. This diversity means that the style of Vougeot wines can vary significantly depending on the producer and the specific location of their plots within the clos.

Generally, wines from the upper part of the slope, near the château, are considered the finest, possessing more elegance and finesse. The lower parts yield more powerful and robust wines. A classic Vougeot offers a rich aromatic profile with notes of red and black fruits, violets, and earthy undertones. With age, they develop complex notes of truffle, undergrowth, and leather. It is a wine that beautifully combines power and elegance, representing a unique piece of Burgundy's history.

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Farthest south in the Côte de Nuits, we find the bustling market town of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Although the commune has no Grand Cru vineyards, one should not mistake the quality. The area's Premier Cru wines are among the absolute best in the region.

The wines from Nuits-Saint-Georges are known for their robustness and honest expression. They are often dark, tannic, and earthy with notes of dark cherries, truffles, and game.

They develop beautifully over time, becoming softer and more complex with age. Nuits-Saint-Georges is an area for connoisseurs who appreciate wine with substance and longevity, and where the price point is often more accessible.

Other Exciting Bottles

Beyond the many superb village wines, there are plenty of other exciting bottles for sale that are well worth experiencing. In particular, keep an eye out for wines from producers like Koji et Hva, Bastian Wolber, and Arnoux-Lachaux.
