Size: 750 ml (Standard)

Located in Saint-Julien in the Médoc, this wine belongs to the classic 2016 vintage, which has been widely acclaimed for its balance and structure. The château has held the status of 4th Cru Classé since 1855 and is known for a direct, no-nonsense style, where Cabernet Sauvignon dominates alongside Merlot and smaller proportions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The vinification is managed traditionally, with a strong emphasis on elegance and freshness, which is reflected in the final glass: characteristic dark fruit, moderate tannins and a balanced acidity that make this vintage suitable for further aging.

2016 was an exceptional year in Bordeaux with optimal growing conditions, resulting in wines that combine ripe fruit with classic minerality and subdued woodiness. Leading critics have generally placed Talbot at the solid end of the vintage with ratings around 92-94 points, and the wine is often cited for its reliability and consistent expression from year to year.

Expert tasting note: (2016 vintage) "Deep & darkly pigmented ruby-red, though not opaque. Ripe cassis fruit on the nose marries with lifted leafy/menthol charachter & toasy/cedary oak notes. The initial fresh cassis on the palate is lifted by fresh acidity. Riper red-plum notes show emerge on the mid-palate leading to a liquorice core. Tannins are velvety & the mid-palate is rounded & medium to full bodied. Alcohol is warming & the finish is long, showing grainy fine tannins & good grip at the end." - 04/22 DCAMW

Producer Notes
Undeniably, Talbot is one of the most famous Médoc wines. Having been in the same family for more than a century, this estate with more than one hundred hectares of vines produces wine that is recognized for the consistent quality of its vintages. 'For many, Talbot embodies the ideal Saint Julien, a generous bouquet, extremely stable and dependable during aging,' emphasize Bettane and Desseauve in their Guide to French Wines. It's true, Talbot is a champion of longevity; even young Talbot is pleasant and rounded, always characterized by silky, mild and very civilized tannins. Talbot possesses an expansive character. It's never withdrawn into itself and has the courtesy of being in a good mood every day. It's a racy wine, with complex marks of Havana tobacco and licorice, classically delicious without ever the slightest hint of austerity.

The smooth texture of this wine is deceptive. Behind its ripe black fruits and acidity, the wine has a strong sense of structure to give shape and potential to the freshness and fruit. The wine will age, not perhaps for the really long term but certainly it is worth waiting until 2025. Roger Voss

The smoke, licorice, espresso and ripe dark, spicy fruits all shine with ease here. Round in texture and a touch oaky, the wine leaves you with sweet, dark red fruits, espresso and licorice, with a nice cedar note. . 92 Points

James Suckling
2016 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2019
This is already a beautiful St.-Julien that's ripe and elegant with not a jot too much oak or tannin, but a very fresh and lively finish that keeps on going. However, there are some serious reserves in this wine that need time to be released. Already very harmonious, but better from 2021.

Andreas Larsson - Tasted
2016 Vintage Tasted: Dec 2018
Floral and lifted nose with elegant fruit like red and dark wild berries, cassis, tobacco and fine wood. The palate is dense, savory and digestible with a bright freshness, youthful but ripe tannins, elegant fruit flavors with aromatic herbs, tobacco and a long sustained finish.

Falstaff
2016 Vintage Tasted: Jun 2017
Deep dark ruby, opaque core, discreet brightening on the rim. Fine plum fruit, a touch of nougat and cassis in the background. Medium complexity, fine blackberry fruit, integrated tannins and some chocolate on the finish. Good aging potential.

2023-2045+. A big Talbot . 19 vvPoints (94/100)
