(Price for 2 fl). The fine Kloster Eberbach has owned plots of land at Rauenthal since the 13th century. These wines are considered some of the best of the legendary winery. This Ortswein has a normal price of DKK 150 (v .6), here you get 2 bottles for basically the same price.
A classic dry Rheingau, aromatic white wine with rich aroma, medium body (12.5%), very fresh despite good length and distinguished acidity.
Great already, but probably better in 2-4 years.
In 1136, the legendary St. Bernard of Clairvaux sent 13 brothers who founded a monastery in the Rheingau, which they found suitable for wine - they had seen the snow melt early here! In the 13th century, Eberbach was famous everywhere for its wines, not least the exquisite ones from the "Cabinet" cellar. Today, unfortunately, "Kabinett" can be used for virtually any wine.
The monastery has owned parts of the Rauenthaler Berg since the 13th century and is today the main owner of the precious slopes (25 out of 100 hectares), divided into parcels such as Baikenkopf (and Baiken), Gehrn, Wülfen and Rothenberg, of which the last 3 make up the lion's share of this wine. The cellar in Rauenthal was established in 1928 and also has a gutsausschank with a wonderful view of the Rheingau and the Rhine.
The monastery was sacked by the Swedish king in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War, but came back strong until, under Napoléon I, it passed to the state of Hesse, which owns it today in the form of the charitable Stiftung Eberbach. The winery is a member of the VDP, Prädikatsweingüter,
From the 1950s the wines went downhill, but under a young oenologist Kathrin Puff, the wines since 2019 are better than ever, but still surprisingly reasonable in price.
The monastery is the sole owner of Steinberg, but the best wines usually come from Rauenthal and Marcobrunn. Other big names are Assmannshäusen (red) and Rüdesheim as well as Hessische Bergstrasse.
P,.S: must NOT be confused with the Rauenthaler Steinmächen, which is a Grosslage of approx. 600 hectares, of which Rauenthal is only 100 hectares. This wine is an Ortswein VDP from the winery's approx. 25 hectares in Rauenthal. And second class!
NB: a total of 6 lots -12 bottles- for sale.
