Sassicaia 1980
/ #59125567
Sassicaia from Tuscany is one of the most influential wines in Italy, starting its journey towards international recognition as early as the 1980s. Created by Tenuta San Guido and classified as DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia , this wine stands out with its characteristic composition based on Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks followed by maturation in oak barrels, which contributes to both structure and complexity.
The 1980 vintage in Tuscany was characterised by challenging weather conditions; spring and early summer in particular were cool, resulting in wines with a more classic, elegant expression and lower alcohol compared to warm years. Sassicaia from this period often appears more classically balanced and is particularly suitable for those who prefer less extraction and more nuance. The wine is known for its ability to develop tertiary aromas over time, and many examples from this vintage can still offer experiences with mature notes of cedar, tobacco and forest floor if the bottle has been stored correctly.
