Cerretalto is one of the still quite a few Montalcino wines that cultivate the specific terroir. It is, of course, the top wine from Casanova di Neri, but when the first vintage - the 1981s - was listed on the market, it did not attract much attention. Back then, not many people could spell Casanova di Neri, Montalcino was still a bit of an insider tip and the writers of the international wine press did not have the muscle and insight they have today.

Cerretalto and Casanova di Neri first made their first breakthrough when the 1888 vintage was released in a riserva edition, to which the Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso awarded the maximum Tre Biccheri. It got Robert Parker and Wine Spectator to look Casanova di Neri's way and up through the 1990s, consensus grew that Cerretalto was something quite special.

However, it was only after Giacomo Neri found out in 1997 with (the now world-famous winemaker and consultant) Carlo Ferrini that things took off. Ferrini's touch meant that Cerretalto miraculously became both more compact and more juicy and since Wine Spectator in 2007 as the first to throw 100 points after the wine (2001 vintage), Cerretalto has in the 8 vintages that have since been released (Cerretalto was not produced in 2002 and 2005) has been one of the, if not the, highest rated Brunello wines on the market.

The wine is matured for 36 months in 500 liter French casks (50% new), and bottled after a light filtration, and only released after wines have been allowed to develop for another 24 months.

There is no reason to shame the wine. It has already happened, and the 2000 vintage falls beautifully into the ranks of something we may well call small works of art. Here is all the magnificent depth and intensity that we expect. Cherries, graphite, blood and iron mixed with vanilla, chocolate and licorice and then with a persistent finish that approaches the incredible.
