The wine is a tribute to Max Schubert, who established Australia's reputation for top wine by creating Grange Hermitage Bin 95 80 years ago.
Max (1913-1994) started at Penfold's as a delivery boy in 1931 and worked here for the rest of his life, 1948-75 as head winemaker.
In 1949 he was sent to France and Spain to learn more about Sherry and other mulled wines, which were the wines Australia was making at the time! But he also visited Lafite, Latour and Margaux and discovered aged Bordeaux. Back home, he sought to create a Bordeaux-like wine.
The first vintage of Grange Hermitage Bin 95 was 1951. The vintages 1952 and 1953 were the first for sale - it is now 80 years ago. They did not get very good reviews and the company was against continuing to make the wine. But Max persisted and over the years Grange became Australia's most famous wine.
Max'x was created in 2016 as the same type of shiraz cabérnet:
The wine has a beautiful deep purple color. The aroma is complex with spicy notes of oregano, olives and boysenberry. A classic Australian expression, balanced and bright with a modern twist. The taste is in perfect balance between sweet fruit and grilled vegetables. This wine delivers generosity of fruit from the Shiraz along with solid Cabernet Sauvignon structure.
2020 is an Australian classic, which is probably even better than 2019 gr small harvest of concentrated berries. 77% shiraz (mainly McLaren Vale), 23% cabernet (mainly Wrattonbully, Padthaway and Coonawarra), aged 12 months in small American oak barrels.
The wine is a few grades above the well-known Koonunga Hill, just below Bin 389.
2020 has not been tasted, but 2019 gets 94p/WIneEnthusiast:
"Max's may be “drink now" range, but to this reviewer they're some of the brand's strongest. This wine opens with oodles of fresh, ripe blueberry and blackberry. Licorice root, cracked black pepper, mint, graphite and violet aromas quickly succeed. The palate is juicy and silky, with a crunchiness to the plump dark fruit and chiseled, chalky tannins. The American oak is well tucked, considering the winery's prodigious use of it. Drink now with a variety of protein, and through 2030. "
NB: Bill for the wine is required. A total of 2 x 2 fl. for sale.
