An icon and the best cabernet from Wolf Blass. First vintage was 1973, and 1973-74-75 won the exclusive Jimmy Watson award as Australia's best wine 3 years in a row, not seen since.
2014 is the 42nd vintage and a superb vintage. The goal is "to weave together the very best wines of the year into a synergistic whole, where the wine becomes greater than the sum of its parts. It is about creating a wine with many layers of flavor in a complex composition of intense fruit characters, magnificent structure, a rich glossy texture, long velvety tannins and a lingering aftertaste."
2014 is, as in previous years, based on cabernet from McLaren and Barossa in particular, as well as shiraz - in 2014 as regularly with a little malbec.

Little brother to Black Label, same cabernet, shiraz and malbec from McLaren and Langhorne Creek, where Wolf Blass' first wine (1967 Shiraz) came from. With a balance of McLaren Vale's superb cabernet and malbec, you get a full-bodied, delicious wine. 2016 got 91p/International Wine & Spirit Competition.
2017 is a very delicious, soft, but with nerve, fruit and softness from Langhorne Creek's shiraz + a little firmness from McLaren Vale. Drinkable now and for the next 4-5 years.
Wolf Blass' wines are classified by color - at the top is Black Label, followed by Brown Label, Gray Label, Gold Label and Silver Label (which are grape blends), followed by Yellow Label and Red Label - and at the bottom several brands, where we best know the daily Eaglehawk. In some years, Platinum is also made from single fields.
Wolf Blass was born in 1934 in Germany, where he was trained as a winemaker. In 1961 he moved to Australia, where he discovered the Barossa, which was already home to many German immigrants - almost more German than Germany!
He founded his company in 1966. I've met him a few times -truly a character, always wearing a bow tie and known for statements like: "I want to make wine that makes weak women strong and strong men weak" -and "A wine with more than 15% alcohol should never get a medal anywhere in the world". So much for Amarone!
