Chateau Pontet-Canet 1970
/ #52578488
This wine is from long before this magnificent 5th Cru chateau became so hyped. The wine is only for collectors of Pontet-Canet and who are just missing this vintage that now has 55 years on the birth certificate. 1970 was actually a year with good weather conditions (can't remember it myself - I was born in 1968) in Bordeaux. A year that resulted in vines with fine ripe grapes.
If I were a Sommelier, I would probably say that you drink it at your own risk and that you can even expect notes of vinegar, wet cardboard, sour fruit and old stuffy cellar 🍷😊
As a good drinking experience, it's probably 98% too late - but as a collector's item, you'll be happy if there's just a gap in the vintage series in 1970.
I found the wine last year when I was cleaning out my mother's estate (why do you never find a box of 1961 Latour) so NO, it hasn't been in a temperature-controlled cellar. It has been lying completely still for many years in a box so I don't think it has seen much daylight. It has probably been dreaming of a nice 12 degree cool bedroom but has probably had to accept sleeping in about 20 degrees.
It has a really nice label/stopper and the condition is not A/B, but it could be much worse.
I don't think I'd drink it - I'd rather please an incarnate Pontet-Canet collector😇🍷
